Hello Neighbour

Welcome to the Oakridge Monitor, where we document what's happening in the southwest Calgary community of Oakridge.

Community association and area residents tackle speeding challenges head-on

Oakridge residents and the Oakridge Community Association (OCA) have taken it upon themselves to reduce speeding through their community, after minimal support from the City of Calgary to solve the growing problem.

In the last couple of weeks, numerous residents along Palliser Drive near the connection to 90th Avenue S.W. have placed yellow signs on their front lawns instructing drivers to “Please Slow Down.”

And earlier this summer, the OCA rented a pair of large signs – one placed on 90th Avenue S.W. and the other on Palliser Drive S.W. – reminding drivers to lower their speed through this community.

Both moves come after repeated requests to the City of Calgary by the OCA and individual residents to install traffic calming measures in the area. While the City has installed speed monitoring signs twice in the last six months on 90th Avenue S.W., little other support has been provided, except to tell the OCA and residents to continue to call 311 to lodge concerns.

Speeding through the community is a relatively new concern to Oakridge, but since the completion of the Southwest Ring Road nearly two years ago, it has quickly jumped to the top of residents’ concerns.

Oakridge residents are encouraged to continue to call 311 to lodge complaints if they see speeding through their community, as that appears to be the best way to spurn the City of Calgary to act.
