Hello Neighbour

Welcome to the Oakridge Monitor, where we document what's happening in the southwest Calgary community of Oakridge.

OCA asks residents for support in lobbying for traffic safety improvements

The Oakridge Community Association (OCA) is looking for support from Oakridge residents to petition the City of Calgary for upgrades to pedestrian safety in our neighbourhood.

Since the introduction of the Southwest Ring Road, and the 90th Avenue S.W. connector, the OCA has heard numerous complaints from residents about speeding along both 90th Avenue and Palliser Drive. Despite multiple efforts by the OCA to bring this matter to the attention of the City, efforts to date have fallen on deaf ears.

The OCA is asking for support from residents and OCA members to lobby the city administration. The OCA’s focus has been on Palliser Drive and 90th Avenue pedestrian crossings. It is requesting that residents contact 311 - Roads Department & log your concerns, while keeping the OCA informed.

Regarding speeding; please contact Calgary Police Service (CPS) at: https://www.calgary.ca/cps/traffic/traffic-service-requests.html

The OCA has been informed that the Police are constrained by the current provincial directives. The provincial government has put a moratorium on any new locations for automated enforcement. CPS are not allowed to issue a summons resulting from photo radar or intersection devices from any new locations and are only allowed to send a photo radar vehicle to a new location to gather statistics.

This is commonly done through the Traffic Service Request (TSR) Program but will not result in tickets being issued until the Transportation Minister advises CPS to do so. The TSR program will result in summonses issued if they are assigned to manned enforcement.

The OCA is asking you to communicate with our local MLA Whitney Issik at: calgary.glenmore@assembly.ab.ca, if you think this is not in the public interest.
