Hello Neighbour

Welcome to the Oakridge Monitor, where we document what's happening in the southwest Calgary community of Oakridge.

Pedestrian lights coming to 90th Avenue and Oakside Gate

Through extensive lobbying efforts to the City of Calgary by the Oakridge Community Association (OCA) Oakridge will see pedestrian lights installed this summer at 90th Avenue and Oakside Gate S.W.

The OCA’s Civic Affairs Committee, led by Hugh Stewart, have been lobbying the City of Calgary since the SouthWest Ring Road opened a few years ago to improve the safety for pedestrians attempting to cross 90th Avenue from Oakridge to get to South Glenmore Park.

The lights will be installed “sometime this summer,” the city says, and orange pylons have already appeared along 90th Avenue and Oakside Gate where the pedestrian lights will be installed.

This is the first of many initiatives the Civic Affairs committee is embarking on to make the community safer, since the opening of the Ring Road and the increased traffic coming off 90th. Other efforts include ongoing speed monitoring along 90th Avenue and Palliser Drive by the Calgary Police Service and the surveying of area residents to see if the majority would like the speed limit on Palliser Drive reduced to 40 km/h from 50 km/h. Two-thirds of Oakridge residents along Palliser Drive have been surveyed to date, with 86% advocating for reduced speeds on that road.
