Welcome to the Oakridge Monitor, where we document what's happening in the southwest Calgary community of Oakridge.

Oakridge sees a 10% year-over-year increase in crime in 2019

The numbers are in from 2019, and the Calgary Police Service reports that Oakridge experienced 10% more crime last year than it did in 2018. In total, there were 80 crimes in the community last year, as compared to 73 crimes the previous year.

Last year, Oakridge averaged just under seven crimes per month, with the busiest months for criminal activity being June and July.

In terms of specific crimes, Oakridge experience six fewer “break & enters” on a year-over-year basis – 21, down from 27 in 2018. The busiest months for B&Es were June and October. 

There were 49 vehicle-related crimes in the community last year, up significantly from 35 reported in 2018. And, again, the busiest months were June and July. Vehicle-related crimes include thefts “from” vehicles and thefts “of” vehicles.

Total Oakridge crimes is calculated as the sum of residential break & enters, commercial break & enters, theft from vehicles, theft of vehicles, assaults (non-domestic), violence other (non-domestic), commercial robberies, and street robberies.

Total Oakridge crimes excludes physical and social disorders. Physical and social disorders tend to be highly visible as they tend to occur in public spaces. Examples include drunks, panhandling, youth gangs, prostitution, littering, loitering and graffiti.

There were 164 cases of physical and social disorder in Oakridge last year, with April, June and January being the busiest months.

Finally, as compared to neighbouring communities, Oakridge falls somewhere in the middle of the pact. There were 90 crimes last year in Braeside, 85 in Cedarbrae, 80 in Oakridge, 74 in Palliser, 31 in Pumphill, and 23 in Bayview.
