New bike skills park coming to South Glenmore Park

New bike skills park coming to South Glenmore Park

A new bike skills park will be built in South Glenmore Park next spring, with an opening date slated for July.

The two-acre park will sit 500 metres west of the sailing club, just north of the polo field, along the Rotary/Mattamy Greenway that sits on the northern border of Oakridge. This will be the city’s second bike skills park. The first – the Fish Creek Mountain Bike Skills Park – opened back in 2016.

Announced as a collaboration between Parks Foundation Calgary and the Calgary Mountain Bike Alliance, the park will be the size of two football fields and its promising to serve riders “of all ages and abilities, from a toddler on a balance bike to intermediate teen and adult riders.”

Once built, the Calgary Mountain Bike Alliance will maintain the park. The project has been funded to date by the City of Calgary (through the donation of land), the Province of Alberta, and Mountain Equipment Co-Op, but fundraising is continuing through the Parks Foundation Calgary web site.

“This park will give families unique space to practice their skills, whether it be a new or experienced rider,” said Sheila Taylor, CEO of Parks Foundation Calgary. “It’s also located on the Rotary/Mattamy pathway, so it will be a fun destination that Calgarians can cycle to.”
